Day 14
Welcome to our final day, Day 14. Today we ride into Normanton but by sunset, we’ll be enjoying the warm ocean water on our feet as we walk along the beaches of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Normanton
From everything I have read, Normanton is a great place to visit.. not only is it home to some of the biggest Barramundi ever caught, But some of the friendliest people you could hope to meet. This picture of a Barra caught in Normanton is the real deal. Certainly a place to stop and wet a line if time permits.
Fishing With Jill
So this is Jill, who runs "Jills Fishing Tours" in Normanton. She owns a small 6 person tinny and for $30 per person, she takes you for a half day fishing tour... And yes. this IS how she'll dress she tells me... Datto, get your fishing gear ready... ( and your tackle ).
Gulflander
The Mighty Gulflander... " Going Nowhere from Nowhere" is its official motto. It's an ALL FEMALE crew who run the service and the train driver "Jill" and her two cabin crew ( pictured above ) are happy to have us onboard. The train runs daily ( depending on demand ) and a return trip to the shortest destination " Critters Camp" is $35 per Adult. I want to take a ride on this train, but I plan to do it after we complete our Burke and Wills Journey as we are hours away from our epic end.
Camp 119
37Klm from Normanton we come to the last monument and Blazed tree by the men who’s journey has shaped the last 14 days of our lives. Known as Camp 119 it is here where Burke and Wills left Mr Grey, and Mr King, as the two went on to find the ocean. They soon returned without having seen the ocean, but they were close enough to taste the salt water in the mangroves they struggled to move in. Returning here, Mr Gray became very ill and would soon die. We are just about finished out long day. Now we head for Karumba that waits for us 107klm away at the end of the line..
End Of The Line
The End of The Road Hotel.. Here we arrive in Karumba and we have a beautiful hotel waiting for us with a very fitting name “ The End of The Road “. Finally, we rid ourselves of our tents and camp food and relax in this perfectly beautiful location on the water front. We’ll have 2 days to just kick back, sleep in, eat well, swim in the ocean, do some fishing, lots of drinking and share our stories at the local pub. Perfect ending to our journey. Time to open the last Burke and Wills bottle of wine
